Pack 601 Parent Orientation

Parent Orientation to Cub Scouting

Organization

The following gives a basic breakdown of the Cub Scouting Organization:

BSA National

Local Council – Del-Mar-Va

District – Freedom Trail

Local Pack – 601

Dens – Divided by age group

Tigers - 1st Grade

Wolves - 2nd Grade

Bears - 3rd Grade

Webloes I - 4th Grade

Webloes II - 5th Grade

Pack Leaders

The following gives a basic breakdown of Pack Leadership:

Cubmaster

1 or more Assistant Cubmasters

Pack Committee

Den Leaders

Assistant Den Leaders

All Leadership positions are volunteer, so please remember that. We are not paid and we donate a lot of our time to Scouting.

Our Focus

It's about the Boys!

Safety of the Boys!

Having Fun!

Doing our best!

Uniforms

Typically there are two uniforms the boys will have.

Class A: Blue Uniforms Shirt for Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelo's

Tan Uniform for Webelo's

** Pack 601 does not require Scout pants.

All Class A uniforms should have the blue belt and

appropriate hat.

Class B: Pack or other Scouting T-Shirt

Parent Involvement

It is imperative that an adult (parent, grandparent, guardian) attend all scouting events with the scout. We have a little saying that BSA does not stand for Baby Sitters of America. Please be involved with the boys and your scout in particular! We are always looking for leaders and help. Please see one of the leaders if you are interested in helping out.

I encourage everyone to take the online "Youth Protection" at:

http://www.scouting.org/pubs/ypt/ypt.jsp

Parent and Boy Conduct
If you or your son have a problem with one of the leaders or other parents, I encourage you to talk with them about the issue. If you feel like you cannot or you do not feel like you got a satisfactory answer, I encourage you to talk to me (the Cubmaster). Yelling and screaming at one of the other parents or leaders is unacceptable and will not be tolerated!!

Fowl or Abusive Language is unacceptable while at a scouting event or around scouts. I ask that you police each other on this. Occasionally a word will slip and I ask you as adults to remind each other of this rule. And please also police the boys.

Smoking in site of scouts is not allowed by the BSA.

We will continually have to remind the boys to keep their hands off of each other. Please help us with that.

Camping

We do camp with the boys. If you wish to go, as a minimum you will need a tent to fit you and your son and sleeping bags. Other things to make life more comfortable would be sleeping pads or air mattresses, camp chairs, and lanterns. We also hike so comfortable shoe/boots are recommended.

Fundraisers
We do 2 - 3 fundraisers a year. At the beginning of the school year we take part in the council sponsored event of selling popcorn. We will also do one or more fundraisers throughout the year. The money raised directly benefits your scout. We ask that the parents raise a profit of $50 to go toward running the pack events. Our fundraiser chairperson can tell you how much popcorn you need to sell to get that profit. It is not a lot. After that, all additional profit goes into an account that we keep for your son that can be used to do anything from purchase a uniform to pay for camping, trips and summer camp. If you do not wish to participate in fundraising, then we ask you for an additional $50 on top of the registration fees. Our books are always open to inspection by any parent if you have any questions. Please see our treasurer.

Registration Fees
We charge $45 for the year (Sept-Aug) for scouts. $22 of the fee goes to the BSA council to pay for registration, Boys Life Subscription (magazine for your sons), accident insurance, etc. The remaining $23 is used to run the Pack 601 program. Things that are covered by these funds are things like pinewood derby cars, rain gutter regatta boats, award patches (pins, etc), rocket motors for our annual rocket launch and pack meeting items like food and beverage. The goal is to pay for all of the basic programming from this and the $50 fundraiser. Camping trips are typically extra and are normally about $15/person.

Please contact me if you have any question.

PACK 601: Summertime Activity: Swimming, Monday, July 7th @ 6:00 at Stonesthrow Pool

Parents,

Our next summertime activity is swimming at Stonesthrow Swimming Pool on July 7th. We plan to have something to eat while we are there.

Also, for parents and scouts going to Alpine Summer Camp, we all need to have Class 3 medical forms signed by a doctor. I have attached the form to this message so you can have it. No scout or parent will be allowed into camp without the medical form filled out and signed by a doctor.

I hope everyone is having a good summer so far and look forward to seeing everyone at the swimming pool.

Pack 601: Pinewood Derby weight-in and race

Parents,

Sorry to be getting this to you in an email so late, but you should have heard from your den leaders and it was announced at the Blue and Gold. Our Pinewood Derby weigh-in and impound is tomorrow night (Monday, March 3rd, 6:30 PM) at Salem United Methodist Church. Your car cannot be more than 5 oz. Less is OK, but more is not allowed. Also, please use the wheels and axle that came with the car. Non-BSA wheels and solid axles are not allowed. If you use these, your son's car cannot be advanced to district if it wins.

We will start the weigh-in with the Tigers at 6:30, Wolves at 6:45, Bears at 7:00, Web 1 at 7:15, Web 2 7:30. Please have your car weighed and ready to go. If the car is from 4.5 - 5oz, we will consider it good. If it is under 4.5 oz we will let you add weight and if it is over 5 oz we will let you take off weight.

The Pinewood Derby itself is on Friday, March 7th at 6:30 at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School.

I look forward to seeing each of you tomorrow night for the weigh-in.

Yours in Scouting,

Boyd

Pack 601: Food Back Pickup, Saturday, February 9th, 1:00 PM @ SUMC

All,

Please remember that we are meeting at Salem United Methodist Church on Saturday at 1:00 PM to collect food bags to the Salem Woods neighborhood. The boys will just pick up the bag from the door steps if people have left them out. We will not be ringing the doorbells or anything of the sort.

The boys should be in uniform and we will work out logistics of which groups cover which section of the neighborhood at the church building.

We distributed 600 bags last week and hopefully we will pick up lots of food!

Phil Keefer is in charge of organizing things on Saturday since I will be out of town
